FAQ
Fabrics and swatches #
Why don't my swatches show? #
Work through these in order:
- The option's name must be in Theme settings > Fabrics and samples > Fabric option names. "Fabric" is in the default list; "Colour" or "Cover" are not. Add your name to the list.
- The option must be linked to the product's fabric list metafield (
custom.fabrics). See link the Fabric option. - The Fabric metaobject definition needs Storefronts access.
- The fabric entries must be Active, not Draft.
- Each entry needs a Swatch image or a Swatch color.
In the theme editor, a product without connected fabrics shows the note "Connect fabrics to show the fabric picker".
One fabric shows as a plain text button. Why? #
That fabric's entry is set to Draft, or the option value's name doesn't match a fabric name. Set the entry to Active. If you typed the option values by hand instead of linking the option, link it.
How many fabrics can one product have? #
Up to 250. That's the most the theme can read for one product. If you sell more, split the range across products, for example one product per grade, and link them with Complete the set.
Can I import products with linked fabric options from a CSV file? #
You can import the products, but not the link. Shopify's product CSV import only links options to Shopify's category metafields. A custom metafield such as custom.fabrics comes in as a plain text option. Link the Fabric option in the admin after importing. It takes a few clicks per product.
Can a product have two fabric options, such as body fabric and cushion fabric? #
One option per product uses the fabric picker: the first option whose name is in Fabric option names. A second option shows as buttons, or as Shopify's native swatches if it's linked to a category metafield.
Can a fabric add a price without creating variants? #
No. A price difference must come from a variant price, so every fabric that costs more needs its own variants. Shopify allows up to 3 options per product. Adding a price through line item properties needs an app with a cart transform, which a theme can't provide.
Does Weft work with combined listings? #
Yes, on Shopify Plus. Combined listings show several products as one product, for example a sofa whose leather versions are separate products. Set them up with Shopify's Combined Listings app, which is available on Plus. When a shopper picks an option value that belongs to another product in the listing, Weft loads that product in place: gallery, title, price, options, buy buttons and the sections below, and the page address changes to that product. No theme setting is needed.
On other plans, use Complete the set to link related products.
Can I use Weft for lighting, rugs or other products? #
Yes. The fabric picker works for any option named in Fabric option names, so finishes, shades and materials work the same way. The Filament style is set up for lighting and uses "Finish, Shade, Fabric, Cushion fabric".
Samples #
Can I enforce the sample limit? #
No. Suggested samples per order is a shopping guide for customers: the sample buttons pause at that number and tell the shopper why, but checkout doesn't check it. Enforcing a limit at checkout needs a Shopify Function, which only an app can add. See suggested samples per order.
How do I give the first few samples free and charge for more? #
Use an automatic Amount off products discount with a fixed amount, applied once per order, on the sample product. For 3 free samples at $4.00, the discount is $12.00. See the recipe.
Why is a sample-only order charged shipping? #
Your normal shipping rates apply unless the sample product is in its own shipping profile with a $0.00 rate. See ship samples free.
Can a shopper add the same sample twice? #
No. Weft adds each sample at quantity 1 and shows "This sample is already in your cart" on a second try. This keeps "first N free" discounts working, because they count units.
Lead times #
Why does the cart show a different lead time from the one on the order? #
The cart works out each lead time again every time it's shown, so it follows your latest data. The line item property on the order is the value saved when the item went into the cart. They differ only if you changed a lead time in between.
Can I show a delivery date instead of weeks? #
Partly. The Lead time block's Show estimated ship dates adds a date range counted from today. It doesn't know about holidays, weekends off or your daily cut-off time, so it's an estimate. For exact delivery promises you need an app.
How do I show the lead time in the order confirmation email? #
Add the snippet from lead time in order emails to your order confirmation template.
Setup and data #
Do I need any apps? #
No. Fabrics, grades, samples, lead times, fabric photos and product groups all run on Shopify's metafields and metaobjects. The Search and Discovery app (free, by Shopify) sets up collection filters and complementary products.
Why do I have to create the definitions myself? #
Shopify doesn't let themes create metafield or metaobject definitions. The setup overview splits the work into tiers so you can start with lead times and add fabrics later.
My fabrics already live in other metafields. Do I have to start over? #
Not necessarily. Set Fabric list metafield and Fabric metaobject type in Theme settings > Fabrics and samples to your existing names. The fields inside your fabric metaobject must use the keys in the definitions reference, so you may need to add or rename fields.
Does the theme support deposits or partial payments? #
No. Deposits change what the shopper pays at checkout, which needs an app.
Theme and updates #
Does switching Theme style change my content? #
No. It changes colors, fonts, buttons, corner radius, spacing, image treatment and a few product card and fabric settings. Your sections, text and images stay where they are.
Is Weft available in other languages? #
Weft comes with English text. To change the storefront wording, go to Online Store > Themes, click ... next to Weft, then Edit default theme content. To sell in several languages, translate the content with Shopify's Translate & Adapt app.
Will theme updates overwrite my changes? #
Changes you make in the theme editor are kept. If you or a developer edit the theme's code files, Shopify can't apply updates automatically, and you'll have to repeat your edits on the new version.
Can you customize the theme for me? #
Customizations aren't part of theme support. For code changes, we recommend hiring a developer from the Shopify Partner Directory. See the support policy.
